When the Nest Empties and Everything Changes: What Now?
You always knew the day would come — the day your children would step out into the world and build their own lives. But what no one prepared you for is how empty it can feel when the house goes quiet.
And for some women, it’s not just the kids who have left. It might also be a marriage or long-term relationship that has ended. Suddenly, the roles that once gave you identity — mother, partner, caregiver — are no longer front and centre. It can feel like the ground has shifted beneath you.
You’re Not Alone!
If you're feeling lost, uncertain, or even invisible in this season, you're not broken. You're human.
Many women go through a powerful identity shift during this stage of life. You may have spent years — even decades — pouring into your family, prioritising their needs, and putting your own dreams on pause. Now, with that chapter closing, you're left wondering:
- Who am I now?
- What do I want for the rest of my life?
- Is it too late to start again?
✨ This Is the Beginning, Not the End
Hold on tight!
As hard as it may feel, this moment holds potential. You're standing at the edge of a new beginning — one where your needs, desires, and growth can take centre stage.
I remember when my youngest daughter, Evie, left for university. On the second or third night, I sat in the quiet of the house and suddenly realised… I didn’t know what to do with myself. The stillness was deafening. I was trying to remember what I used to do before motherhood filled every corner of my life. It felt alien. Like I had lost touch with the version of me that existed before I was “Mum” 24/7.
I was so proud of her — bursting, really — but I also felt a deep ache. It was the moment I realised how much of myself I had put to one side over the years. And it was also the moment I knew something had to shift — I had to shift.
That was the beginning of me rebuilding a life where I mattered again.
Now is the time to:
- Reconnect with yourself — your passions, your values, your voice
- Redefine what joy and success mean to you
- Rebuild confidence after years of self-sacrifice or emotional strain
- Explore your purpose beyond the roles you’ve played
📚 A Book That Helped Me Reconnect With Myself
One thing that really helped me in those early days was reading A Year of Mystical Thinking by Emma Howarth - I think you’ll love it too! It was like having a warm, inspiring guide whispering, “Try something new… just for you.”
Make life feel magical again!
The book encouraged me to explore things I’d never made time for before — like yoga, sound baths, journaling, and meeting up with like-minded friends. It wasn’t about being “spiritual” in any particular way — it was about reconnecting with my curiosity, creativity, and sense of self.
It reminded me that this next chapter could be one of discovery, not just recovery.
📖 What’s your book — the one that might help you find your way back to you?
You’re exactly where you’re meant to be….
💬 Let’s Be Real…
This journey can be emotional. Some days you might feel excited about the possibilities. Others, you might feel overwhelmed, grieving the past, and unsure where to begin. That’s normal.
You don’t have to have all the answers today — but taking even one small step toward you is powerful.
